Prior to being rescued, a male cat named Cotton was left for dead on the streets – starving, mange-ridden, and alone.
There were scabs all over his eyes due to parasitic mites which made it impossible for him to open them in order to look for food.
Thanks to Carmen Weinberg, founder of Animal Friends Project Inc., who served as his guardian angel when she took him under her wing upon his arrival.
“He couldn’t even see or open his eyes because the mites were so bad,” Carmen recalled. “It must have been so scary for him out there not being able to see. He was all alone and so skinny because he couldn’t find food.”
She cleaned Cotton up and helped him recover by feeding him sumptuous meals, treated his scabs with creams, coconut oil, and different antibiotics.
“We could just see his tense body start to relax as the days passed,” Carmen said. “He was finally able to rest without scratching so much. Cats like Cotton depend on people to heal because they cannot always ask for help … I’m sure so many people passed him by because of how sick he looked, but he was just waiting for someone to give him a chance.”
Although it took him a long time to be able to see again, Cotton sensed that he was being well taken care of and grew a strong bond with his new guardian. His transformation was indeed an incredible thing to witness and the day that he managed to open his eyes again was all the more spectacular.
“We thought he was blind, and that he would be blind forever. The vet thought that even when his eyes recovered they might be damaged, but they weren’t. It was such a wonderful surprise. His eyes were just beautiful.”
As it turned out, Cotton’s one eye is vivid blue while the other is hazel. Due to his unique pair of eyes, the beautiful cat got a lot of suitors who wanted to adopt him but he already was too attached to Carmen that it’s hard for her to give him away.
“We got so many applications for him due to his looks, but in the end, I saw how attached to me he had become. I didn’t have the heart to put him through another big change. He had already been through so much.”
