The Piano Guys are known and well-loved not only for their beautiful musical renditions but also for their dramatic and exciting videos. Each video they release is always more impressive than the last. Last year during the holiday season, they released their best video yet. It’s mind-blowing to try to figure out how they pulled it off.
In the video, Jon Schmidt from The Piano Guys plays the Christmas hit “I Saw Three Ships” on a piano in the middle of a dark street in Sandy, Utah. Not only is his piano covered with lights, but each of the instrument’s 88 keys is connected to a set of colorful Christmas lights on houses on the street.
As Schmidt plays, the houses light up in sync with the song, and the result is a spectacular and festive musical light show.
The faster the song got, the more lights lit up outside. In total, it looked like two houses and yards were covered with lights that were synced to the piano. As the song got faster and faster, so did the light show. The video was absolutely mesmerizing to watch!
According to The Piano Guys’ website, 500,000 Christmas lights starred in the display and 46,000 watts of power, as well as 4,900 digital channels, “to ensure that the entire spectrum of the piano’s keyboard was featured brilliantly”. The page also reveals the video was filmed in the middle of the night and says the police actually showed up during the filming.
“I Saw Three Ships’ is one of my very favorite pieces to play on the piano,” Schmidt wrote about the song. “It is just pure fun. Arranged over 20 years ago, it still stands as the arrangement that was the hardest for me to finish. It was a 6-month process to get the arrangement to finally feel right.”
