Lea Salonga Expressed Her Disappointment of the Extremely Challenging PWD Ramp
Filipina Broadway Diva Lea Salonga could not help but express her opinion on the photo shared by one of her Facebook friends where it showed a ramp meant for Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
The ramp whose location was still unknown seemed life-threatening for PWDs, almost resembling a steep slide. Lea pointed out her displeasure with the photo, saying:
“No, no, a thousand times, no. Whoever was in charge of that ramp needs to be taken out and shot.”
Clearly, the design of the ramp did not comply with the Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 – An Act to Enhance the Mobility of Disabled Persons by Requiring Certain Buildings, Institutions, Establishments, and Public Utilities to Install Facilities and Other Devices.
The singer’s post was subsequent to her friend Jeffrey John Imutan’s post which first showed the photo with the caption:
“Lea, ibang level ng PWD friendly bansa natin. hahahaha ctto.”
Many netizens did not let the photo pass and shared the same sentiment through their comments on Lea’s post.
“Pang Cirque du Soleil ang elevation,” one said. “To quote a fine gentleman friend of yours: ‘Oh my!'” another netizen added.
One even compared the ramp with “Mt. Everest” while another said that it must have been built for “skaters”.
A netizen even left an important reminder, stating:
“As a Physical Therapist, remember this: ‘The rate of incline should be 1:12 for self propelled wheelchairs. This means the ramp must raise 1 inch in height for each 12 inches of ramp length. To conform to ADA standards a 9 foot rise (108 inches) would require a ramp to be 108 feet long.’
“That is NOT a ramp but more like a slope befitting the Winter Olympics!” the netizen added.
We could only hope that after the photo made rounds on social media, authorities responsible for the ramp would take action immediately and may their mistake be not followed by others.
