Everybody knows that a teacher’s career isn’t easy, especially if money is short – but when a classroom of sweet students came up with a solution for their teacher’s financial problems, the result was priceless.
Bruno Rafael Paiva, a middle school teacher from Brejo Santo, Brazil, had not received a salary in two months and was living and sleeping at the school. According to Paiva, he has been covering the maternity leave of another teacher and due to the bureaucracy, his name has not yet been included in the payroll.
“Teacher life is not easy,” Paiva wrote on Facebook. “When I saw that I was not going to receive a month and a half’s salary, I saw everything going black. I sank into depression, worried and lost, without knowing how to pay the bills and help my family.”
When the students found out about his plight, they pooled together a total value of $400, roughly two-thirds of Paiva’s monthly salary, from secretly selling chocolates and creating a raffle to raise money for their beloved teacher.
As a means of surprising him with the gift, the students wrote pieces of apology and acknowledgment for his efforts around the classroom. When Paiva arrived for class, they asked him to go around the room and find the papers so he could read them out loud.
The last note asked him to open a box on his desk. When he saw the money in the box, he started to cry. His students immediately rushed in to hug him.
Afterwards, Paiva wrote, “I have many rooms that I have loved in my heart to be a teacher, but no room has ever shown such love, help and affection for my teacher’s work as the 1st # Buildings did today.
They are students like me, who still make me believe in the education of the country, believe in the love of others, in the compassion of putting oneself in the place of others, and believe mainly in the respect and love of the student towards the Professor of his school.”
